Social Networking...

So, I recently created an account on Facebook, about three months ago (I'm a little behind, I know) and one of the things that I noticed is that the social networking sites all seem to be converging to some extent. Some of my friends have links to MySpace pages on their profiles, while others post status updates on Facebook via Twitter accounts. Maybe I am just not up to speed yet, but do most people use all of these sites in conjunction with one another? I am just now getting used to keeping up with my Facebook page, so I can't imagine keeping track of three different social networking venues.

While I'm on the topic of Facebook, another thing that I have noticed recently is the fact that things I search for on Google just happen to appear in advertisements on my Facebook account the next day. I remember reading something in my Media Literacy class about the ways that activity online stores information that allows advertisements to be displayed that are tailored to people's individual interests and have noticed this ocassionally in the past, but it seems like such advertisements have been popping up more and more these days. Has anyone else picked up on this?

  1. My blogging AHA moment was when I linked my blog to my facebook.... This way I had a lot of eyeballs who are interested in my otherwise possibly checking me out. When a topic struck a chord (like the Gates arrest this summer), I got more feedback via facebook than I EVER did as a stand-alone blog. I highly highly recommend it!

  2. Wow I'm very surprised you just got on Facebook. congrats to holding out this long. I only use Facebook myself. Myspace got too creppy for me so i deleted it and Twitter just is too confusing to use and I don't want to tell people what I'm doing all hours of the day.

  3. I recently picked up an iPhone and now my social networking has grown exponentially. As a newbie to Facebook I believe you'll be shocked at how fast you become part of the whole and how quickly your information gets around. When I started up my account I was on only about a week when I had been friended by around 50 old friends and class mates. And here I thoughtI was kind of a loner.

To comment on the other part of your post I do fing it awefully earie that the emails you send out now are scanned for phrases and words to provide Goggle search suggestions. Makes you wonder who is reading these emails in general? Perhaps this is why President Obama was told he would have to give up his Blackberry?
